We all deserve a nurturing environment and a special someone that yearns to partner up to attain a constant state of forgiveness with love and beauty as the high ideal, but this crazy fucked up world we live in instead throws us curved balls and no matter how much we may wish and hope to have some sort of security, pain remains the only constant, blind siding us as we try to make our way down our paths. My experience has always proven friends and lovers to be the great keys to helping us through the times of trouble that so often wish to strike us down, but when friends or lovers are responsible for our sorrows we turn to music and the arts. I know I’m tired of knowing pain but it seems pain craves intimacy, pain can never be alone….
I’m a firm believer in giving up when all else fails! However, giving up doesn’t mean you have to stop being an artist. The artists work is never done. The artist lives in constant motion just as the universe in which the artist resides and creates never ceases. Some of my favorite artists really sucked at this game we’re all trapped in and in their life time they were considered failures, drunks, wretches of society, whores, whatever… but in my opinion they’ll always be remembered as extremely fucking beautiful people with raw talent with an array of emotional depth, sensitivity and insight that I am proud to call human and enjoy. For the sake of tags, let’s name drop a few of these people… Charles Bukowski – “laureate of American lowlife”, Grislidis Real – whore, Oscar Wilde – died penniless and homosexual, Henry Darger – artist/loner… the list could go on and on but instead I’d rather you consider the persistent spirit each of these people had while raising their voices and being true despite what the world thought of them. Living in such a matter is a radical act.
Now I’d like you to take a look at the work my friend has been doing for quite some time now. I first started following her blog chronicling her experience dropping out of fashion school to battle cancer waaaaay back in the days of my living in San Francisco. Kaylin and I had a lot of mutual friends and we hung out from time to time at night clubs and fashion shows. Whenever someone you party with gets really sick or injured it’s always a big reality check and not something to take lightly. After her diagnosis I remember a lot of people that knew Kaylin started to slow down and refocus their energies on more positive pursuits. There was a change of pace all around. The really great news now is that she’s better and working harder than ever to pursue her various artistic dreams with a comic book tucked in her belt.
Slightly cynical, slightly irreverent, and REALLY hilarious, “Terminally Illin” is a candid look into the life of a young adult battling cancer, but with a psychedelic-sci-fi twist! It’s more than a comic book: It’s provocative, educational, entertaining, and totally original.

Our heroine travels inside her own body with her pet battle-kitty, to take on the evil nazi tumors, cancer aliens, and The Tumornator – on a microscopic level, where cancer starts. Entering the world of cancer feels a lot like falling down the rabbit hole – think of “Terminally Illin” as a crazy, chemo-induced Alice in Wonderland adventure, with as much ‘Family Guy humor’ that could be squeezed in.

By using humor and a creative visualization (guided imagery) as a way to cope with harsh cancer treatments, Kaylin was able to keep her attitude positive during treatment. She teamed up with Jon to write several story lines. These comics brought hours of laughter to us throughout all of the pain, and we want to bring this laughter to you and to others that might find it inspiring.

Right now the project has a kickstarter page that you can check out here. For those of you that aren’t familiar with kickstarter, well, here’s how it works… they aren’t asking for free money, they’re looking for people to pre-order the stuff they’re offering: tees, comic book, posters, etc… and if they hit the goal of $8500 they get all the cash to go forth with the awesome cool work they did while Kaylin was BATTLING CANCER, and if they don’t reach the goal they won’t get any of the cash and the universe will have once again reinforced for me how shitty the world is capable of being…
You don’t want that…do you?
The most difficult thing is to find a blog with unique and fresh content but your blog is different. Bravo.
