Kimi Recor on Secret and the Noise, Lilofee, and Life

kimi

A few years back I met Kimi Recor while living in San Francisco. My favorite memory of Kimi Recor followed one of Gemini Disco’s biggest parties at The Mezzanine in San Francisco. I helped Chris (a founder of Gemini Disco and her co conspirator) with the decorations. Together we created an elaborate Reindeer S/M scene equipped with balloon didlo’s (like the animal balloons you enjoyed as a child) and neon lights, plus a huge balloon drop and balloon people fucking all over the Mezz… TRULY MAGICKAL.. Anyway, skip ahead to the end of the night and I’m in full drag looking for a cab on San Francisco’s infamous 6th Street in SOMA puffing a cigarette, getting hollered at by homeless men that wanted to bone my “vagina” when all of a sudden angel Kimi pulled up and asked me where I was trying to get to… “ummmm I’m supposed to be meeting a dude in the Mission,” I responded. She took my ass there and I had a fabulous night with him. Forever and ever I’ll love Kimi for that. And on top of all that she makes amazing music. She has a band called Lilofee that is rocking clubs all over the place and she is working on a side project with Chris entitled Secret and the Noise that is equally grand with the possibility of exceeding anything we’ve witnessed before. Thank the heavens!! Keep reading for an interview, MP3 and mind exploding chat about the world…

Here she is fronting the band Lilofee:

Pictures from the Pitchfork/Showpaper Benefit!!

The Pitchfork curated, Todd P organized, Showpaper benefit at the Market Hotel went off with a few hitches, mostly, the power blowing out multiple times during the course of the day and some bands sound being far worse than others. This is the Market Hotel though and I guess we should just expect that from this kind of venue…? Whatever, the show was still well worth it and the chance to see all these buzzing bands play in one place for a good cause is something that’s hard to complain about. While there were no bands playing that would accurately be described as bad, only The Smith Westerns came off as a bit of a let down. This might however be due to their banter showing their age and the obviousness that all of them were younger than me.  Maybe I’m just jealous that they were playing a cool show I was mearly watching.  At the top of my list are unquestionably Javelin, Real Estate and Delorian, the last of whom most likely played the days most impressive set.  I had to leave before Cymbals Eat Guitars took to the stage, but I’m sure I’ll see them sometime soon and then be forced to decide whether I think their brand of revived early nineties indie rock is worth my time and yours.  In the meantime, you should all be highly anticipating Javelin’s recordings to surface beyond their myspace since they bring the kind of hip-pop dance party many bands try for and few achieve. Real Estate’s debut full length is arriving soon and if their live show is any source or indication, it should be cause for excitement. Lastly, the continuation of Delorian’s evolution in sound from electroish rock, to blissed out, whimsical, electroish rock should be tracked closely readers. Their show blew the roof off and got just about everyone in the room moving, something I see less and less of these days.  I can guarantee they will float your boat, unless of course, dear reader, you don’t want to be forced to dance like you’re Prince on prom night, in which case just stay home and give your old Bright Eyes records one more spin. Don’t fret, we’ll have fun without you.

Some pictures I took at the show after the leap:

Wynne Renz “made love, warm inside the armpit of a Bird-like mastodon”

Today was a great day. I went to Amoeba where I happily realized The Gossip will perform tomorrow at 6pm in Hollywood for free *I might add* and it will be crowded so get their early! I picked up two of The Incredible String Band’s albums and one Pearls Before Swine album then headed home to indulge. The psych rock mixed with the joint I inhaled really got me feeling introspective so I headed over to Skylight Books to grab a few new books of poetry. Their shelves are jammed packed with great reading material. Truly the best neighborhood bookstore. I picked up “Nobody Loves Nobody” by Wynne Renz, “Astral Dick” by Toylit and “Revolutionary Letters” by Diane di Prima. From there, I headed to Best fish Taco in Ensenada and got taco’s whilst watching the cutest gay couple ever stuff their precious young faces with fishy Mexican goodness. Feeling 100% jealous I headed home and opened up “Nobody Loves Nobody”. I bought the book on a whim. When I skimmed the book the line “This one time at camp / we stood over kyle’s body / and watched him die” caught my attention and made me wanna buy the book. Having never heard of Wynne Renz I was expecting to be mildly entertained and a bit disappointed that I spent ten bucks on an unsure thing when I could have bought Justin Chin’s “Bite Hard” – a book my shelves are sorely lacking! However, as luck would have it, I sat down, put on Pearls Before Swine “The Wizard of Is” and opened up “Nobody Loves Nobody” and continued reading one poem after another until I sadly realized I had gobbled up every line in one lovely sitting. Enough of me. Check out a few of my favorite poems: Continue reading

El Perro Del Mar “Change of Heart”

El Perro Del Mar is another one of the fantastic additions to the Swedish music scene. God, I feel like I’m always hyping Sweden, I should just up and move there… Have you seen this video of “Change of Heart” starring Sandor Vlah and Gyula Takaes a k a The Golden Power? They are a Hungarian body building dance performance art team and ummmm can we somehow get the funds together to turn them into porn stars?? Seriously!! After watching this video and seeing the movements they are capable of, I contemplated giving up drinking and smoking to work on my ass. However, I am fucking lazy and don’t really think I can put in the effort to get the physique and bodily talents these two posses. Alas, I’ll forever remain “vanilla” in comparison.

SUPER SWEET PITCHFORK/TODD P/SHOWPAPER SHOW TONIGHT AT THE MARKET HOTEL IN BROOKLYN!WEET

The Cover of Showpaper’s current edition

Artwork by Kemialliset Ystävät

I don’t know how this one slipped under my radar until the night before its going down but most likely it has just been kept somewhat on the DL due to the fact that the line up is super stellar and undoubtedly the best thing music related going on in the city tomorrow, Saturday October 24th, the last official day of CMJ New York.

NOTE: This is not an official CMJ event so that means it’s cheap ($12.00) and the money goes to a great cause.
A few words about Showpaper from its myspace page:

“SHOWPAPER is a FREE bi-weekly print-only publication which aims to list and promote all ages DIY shows in the NYC and tri-state area. We try to spread the word about shows that would otherwise slip under the radar, and the all ages scene in general. Each issue also features a full color piece of art by a contemporary artist. Look for it in your local record store/gallery/café/pizza place/etc.”

The paper is always free to pick up and gets its funds from donations from its readers and other generous folk. The line up for this show is pretty much worth its weight in gold, so please if you are free on Saturday, fuck CMJ, get thee to Bushwick, see some great music and support a good cause. It goes on ALL NIGHT LONG…

Light Asylum

Awhile back I wrote about Bruno and the Dreamies over at Fantastic Weapon. Then Bruno and the Dreamies became Brother Bruno… now Bruno has moved on to Light Asylum. He’s working with Shannon Funchess. The music these two have put together is outstanding! And I highly suggest giving these videos some much deserves attention. And while you do that I’m going to work on getting my ass to NYC and get to one of these WEIRDrecord parties.

Help Prince Rama of Ayodhya Get Back On Their Feet And They’ll Gladly Set Yours A’ Tappin’

Prince Rama of Ayodhya make some of the most interesting music that any band is making nowadays. That their music also taps into an unquestionably cosmic vein and that their live shows can work up almost unimaginable amounts of positive energy just adds to their special importance in today’s music scene.  Add to this the rare factors that they also happen to be some of the nicer people that I’ve ever met and that they are affiliated with minorprogression sweethearts The Whitehaus Family Record and what I’m about to tell you will begin to hint at the pure awfulness of its actuality…

THIS PAST SATURDAY THEY HAD ALL OF THEIR EQUIPMENT TOTALLY JACKED/STOLEN/RIPPED OFF/TAKEN FROM THEM!!!

LOOK HOW AWESOME THEY ARE!!!!

DID YOU SEE ALL OF THAT BEAUTIFUL EQUIPMENT????

IT’S ALL GONE!!!!!!!
