TELEFON TEL AVIV; THE RACE; SEASPIN played Club Spaceland on September 25th, 2009. Telefon Tel Aviv makes some of the prettiest, darkest, melodic dance tracks ever. When Charlie passed last January 22, 2009 fellow band mate Joshua Eustis, family, friends and fans were devastated. Electronic music truly lost someone special and I thought I’d never get to see them play again; to make matters worse, Charlie passed a week after the release of Immolate Yourself, easily the band at the peak of their career. I’ve been playing the album at least a couple times a week since I got it last January so it’s no surprise to say I totally geeked out when I learned Joshua Eustis teamed up with Fredo Nogueira to go out on tour to promote his beautiful new album.
The opening band Seaspin was a very pleasant surprise. Hailing from Los Angeles, and me being new to the city, I hadn’t yet heard them play. They’re taking their cues from My Bloody Valentine, The Cranes.. you get the idea.. I’m really excited to see how they progress and I suggest you keep them on your radar.
The second band The Race did nothing for me.
Then came the Telefon Tel Aviv performance which was fantastic. Both Joshua and Fredo are physically and vocally gorgeous and they had the whole crowd gushing and swooning as they poured out layered melody after layered melody. “We’re all on their string,” I thought, as I danced amongst a crowd of head bobbers. They played songs off of Immolate Yourself all the way through. A silver and blue backdrop with video projections enhanced the ethereal reality they created. By the end of the night I felt like a vampire that had devoured a few people. So much pain, beauty and life!! I look forward to seeing the direction these two guys go in. MP3′s at the bottom..
