BROTHER BRUNO: HE’S SO DREAMYYYYYYYY

So I’ve been a fan of Brother Bruno for a few years now; he’s an artist from Brooklyn. Brother Bruno is tapped into “otherfrequencies. He plays mellow electronic music that takes its cues from downtempo and balaeric beat. So yeah, I recommend riding into the next wave the recession era is sending our way with Brother Bruno on decks; the parties will be mellower but still dance music with friendlier vibes and lots of love shared.

I got the chance to do some email chatting with him and he sent me a brief manifesto (of sorts) telling us what he is all about…

“My first encounter with music was watching my older cousin play a church organ during my uncles wedding. I was 6 years old and knew then that music was my “calling”. The following night I was walking in my sleep, the only time I’ve ever slept walk, and I pissed all over his piano. I guess I was marking my territory. I got over how embarrassed and started piano lessons a few months later.

“My initial influences were largely classical and religious – I come from a very religious family and that definitely inspired philosophical questions for me growing up. My parents were raised in Old World southern Italy and both studied to be servants of the church. Brother Bruno is in part a reference to monasticism but more secular and communal. I’m an Aquarius and believe strongly in a brotherhood of man. I was named after my father who was named after Mussolini’s son so I have an interest in socialist forms of living. Only one of my pieces, El Regresso, is composed under the Brother Bruno moniker. It is only one of my monikers, and I may or may not use it again. El Regresso is a five song EP and you can listen to it for free at myspace.com/thedreamies or purchase it at cdbaby.com/cd/brotherbruno.

“I don’t consider myself religious. Religion is too traditional and regimented for my personality. The divine is everywhere so I believe you are worshiping it in every day acts and don’t necessarily need ritualism to pray to one’s god. Though I love religious music I believe that music itself is divine in nature and not necessarily a form of worship. A piece of art can describe or reference something divine where music, to me, is almost God-like itself.

“Several years ago I tripped on mushrooms and I’ve never looked at music the same. At point I almost lost my mind but was rescued by the song “Back to Life” by Soul II Soul. I have tons of influences but I happen to have I have immense respect for this band, and particularly this song cause I believe it saved me from a really bad trip. During my hallucination I became conscious of certain universal tones one of which has been referred to in the past as the Mystic Chord, something I have been studying. It is believed that one of these mystic chords is able to bring about Armageddon.

“I was born in Newark NJ and have spent time in Miami, FL, Portland, OR and summers at my parents village in Italy. Brooklyn in where I currently call home. Living in Williamsburg has opened my eyes to two very polar opposite paradigms. On one hand I am surrounded by young artists (I heard once that there is the largest concentration of artists in the world here) but on the other hand it is the home base for the Hasidic religion which is very conservative in nature. I know little about their culture though I live in their buildings, shop at their grocery stores, and have had various other “personal” encounters with them. Somehow we all live together though in clearly distinct worlds simultaneously. Being a son of immigrants I have always felt like I am the product of the Old World meeting the New one. Brooklyn is like overlapping layers of history and I often feel lost in the time warp.

“Currently I am writing writing songs for my next album, and I planning on finishing several music videos this year. Blue Moon, directed by artist Micki Pellerano, is my first one and can also be viewed on my myspace site. I have toured all over the country and plan on touring mostly in Europe soon, possibly getting a chance to visit my families’ village again. If anyone has interest in booking me here in the States or in Europe they can reach me at ohbrotherbruno@gmail.com.”
