Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele – “Howard”
The new Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele video returns to the simplicity and charm that his video for “Meet Me in the Garden” prematurely ran away from. The video’s use of simple psychedelic imagery and fun loving antics is what will keep the ukulele playing Dent May enjoyable. Once he has our hearts then he can consider making video’s that are self absorbed and delusional like “Meet Me in the Garden”. Until then, he is the cute dorky kid with the ukulele.

A GUN THAT SHOOTS KNIVES: BEST MINORPROGRESSION PARTY YET
So last Thursday (March 26th, 20009) my living room turned into a scene from Spinal Tap. The guys from A Gun That Shoots Knives showed up early fully equipped with fog machines, flashing neon lights, outer space outfits, props, merchandise, huge speakers and enough party energy to power a few vehicles.

Anyway, I’m trying to make an attempt to honor really rad dead people, so in that vein I’d like to throw up a shout out to Applecoke. Just know we’re working on gettin’ a big old eight ball for you baby and we’re gonna have it delivered to your grave along with some fabulous cosmetic products..

SXSW DAY 5: IN WHICH WE LOOSE OUR MINDS AND KIND OF FUCK UP (SATURDAY THE 21ST)

We met up for taco’s after sleeping with the locals and then made our way to see Ebony Bones again, our only intentional repeated performance. Unfortunately the diva was set the play at the worst venue of the week, Peckerheads. Leave it to Rolling Stone to fuck shit up and further exemplify their incompetence and lack of taste. Ebony Bones and company brought their A game to a tiny stage in front of a very tiny packed and sweaty afternoon dance floor, though their show suffered some from the horrible sound system that continually cut in and out. All the members of the band looked deservedly displeased by the lack of help from the incompetent sound guy. Needless to say, whenever the sound did work everyone danced like maniacs because Ebony Bones is awesome, and it is always easy to imagine her and her crew in a space they deserve, full of crazy lights, disco balls, feathers, glitter and decadence. These were at least the things we kept in mind as we tried to delete the Coors light and Lone Star neon signs that bordered the top of Peckerhead’s stage.
SXSW DAY 4: AUSTIN BLURRIER, MORE DEBAUCHED AND BETTER THAN EVER (FRIDAY THE 20TH)

Our longest and most excellent day of the festival started at Pitchfork’s Showcase at Emo’s. Girls was the first band to go on (at least when we showed up) and they come from the San Francisco area which may explain their 1960′s Californian pop style. This isn’t the Beach Boys revisited though and everything they touch seems to get all covered up in lots of reverb. The lead singer/guitarist suggests a Zepplinish, pre metal virtuosity that never really makes its way into their music, though there are moments where you feel like it may someday. Their songs seem well constructed enough and aren’t totally boring, but if they let themselves rock out just a little bit more or piled on a some stranger atmospherics, it would likely take their sound to the next level. The singer’s voice suggests an early Conner Oberst, but it comes off as affected in a different sort of way, one that I’m not sure if I buy yet.

We started at Urban Outfitters (Which is totally like, our favorite store ever!!) near University of Texas at Austin for the free party they were throwing that afternoon. The first band we to play was Crystal Stilts who I guess are okay; if a) you are looking for Velvet Underground/ Suicide esq background music for a heroin induced orgy, b) you listen to aesthetic choices and atmosphere in your pop songs more than melody and lyrics or c) you like kind of boring music. It’s not that they are a bad band, they are totally inoffensive and fine, but there is nothing innovative here and no real sense of urgency or showmanship to make up for that.
SXSW DAY 2: “LET’S GET ALONG WITH IT Y’ALL” WEDNESDAY THE 18TH

Our day started out (though it shouldn’t have) with Whispertown2000 (omg… check out their stats – are they really listening to themselves that much???), a southern, dual female, lead vocalists jam/ alt country band. This was the kind of annoying, forced, twang fest that scared me away from Texas daydreams in my youth. They closed their set with a song about time which made me want to barf (they love time? Wasting mine maybe?…). I’d suggest staying far, far away from them.
Afterwards the band we were there to see came on (thank God), the Evangelicals. Hailing from Oklahoma city are an Oklahoma City they often get compared to The Flaming Lips, but the band is comprised of sexy/hip Midwestern boys (which the Lips never really were) and share the Lips penchant for the strange. Their sound is more whimsical post-punk psychedelic than the Lips stuff nowadays with vocals reminiscent of early Robert Smith with a more helium croon.
SCOTT COFFEY DIRECTS NEW HANDSOME FURS VIDEO
So I had no idea the band Handsome Furs existed until I realized Scott Coffey was directing a video for them. Scott Coffey is one of the many artists I watch via the internet. He seems really rad; he’s acted in a few David Lynch movies plus a few others, he lives with the hip writer Blair Mastbaum, and he directed the movie Ellie Parker and apparently makes music videos too.
