Running the fine line of fairy tale and horror film, Larkin Grimm continually surprises me. Larkin Grimm’s first album, “Paplar” came out through Young God Records. Listening to it transports participants to a surreal, magical, frightful world. I bought the album on a whim after reading a write up that said something to the effect of “Are you sick of unicorns and gum drops? How about sex starved witches and goblins!”
I feel like the album is a great direction for freak folk, having listened to the happy radicalness that was popularized by Devendra Banhart and Coco Rosie the past several years was great but Larkin Grimm is definitely adding an extra lyrical layer of emotional depth to the movement. If ever Antony gets her hands on her so they can write a song together, I think it would instantly leap to the top listened to song on my Itunes.
Her lyrics are heavily literate, sexual and Wicca inspired but she doesn’t come off as pretentious, I think it’s her unique voice and vocal range that elevate her work to a level that demands my attention. She is also obsessed with her body and the weird things the human body does, and I find her obsession and the odd wisdom she discovers delightful. I’d highly recommend going to her myspace page and glance through her blog entries, she writes about her outsider childhood on a commune full of psychic healers, apparently her family was apart of the The Holy Order Of MANS, they left the group when she was six and moved to the mountains where she says she was raised by her dog as they ran wild through the woods, it’s great.
